Sawgrass Fields Lightning Policy

  • The SPFC Site Director will be in charge of the Sawgrass facility with respect to all Lightning Protocol decisions.

  • All SPFC staff/coaches should be receiving lightning alerts from My Lightning Tracker (alerts sent out when lightning is within an 8-mile radius). The My Lightning Tracker app should be downloaded by all SPFC staff/coaches and used as a primary method of monitoring lightning. ALL SPFC players, parents, and staff MUST evacuate the field of play and go to their CARS immediately in an orderly fashion when they are asked to clear the fields when lightning is inside the 8-mile radius.

  • If a SPFC staff member or coach feels the area is unsafe, then he or she should clear the fields regardless if the My Lightning Tracker has sent an alert or not. Safety is our first concern with inclement weather!

  • Remember, for every lightning strike, add on an additional 30 minutes per strike before returning to the fields.

  • When the area is clear to return to play, the SPFC Site Director will notify players that they can return to the field of play.

All notifications regarding cancellations, delays, and return to play will be communicated through Playmetrics via a notification (not an email), so please have your Playmetrics notifications turned on. Notifications will also be communicated via the X social media platform and verbally on-site to players and parents.
